There you have it a "dilema day" at Montrose. Thanks for posting your excellent decision making process. You followed the simple rule to keep it safe at Montrose....when in doubt...don't.
Were you next to the Dog fence? You may and I say..."may" have tried to enlist the help of the guards to clear the water directly in front of the launch. Since the swim area was open, Im guessing it wasn't really windy enough to go.
UNless you're an expert Montrose rider, the wind and water will fool you into thinking there's more out there. Plus there's some current from left to right as you face the water. The stronger the wind, the stronger the waves the stronger the current. It all takes away from the kites power. Most of the sand you see has been deposited by the current and the hook at Montrose.
My Montrose test....with the kite overhead, I walk very slowly towards the kite (downwind), and then pull in on the bar...if Im getting picked up on to my tip toes..or getting air...then there's enough. If Im sheeted in and not getting boosted, then there won't be enough on the water.
You made a great decision to wait for others, and then not go when you wern't 100% comfortable! Great job!
