Snowkiting Feb 3rd Before Superbowl

Feb 3rd early afternoon looks good for Snow kiting on Grassy Lake. I have a foil so 10 mph will be enough wind.

I was looking for reports from the ice thickness today but did not see any. I have a bit marked 2 and 4 inches to take a core on the lake , I just need to pick up a new cordless drill. With the cold weather we have had since Thursday, I expect to have four inches.

If grassy does not look good, might redirect to wonder lake, the entire south end of the lake is less than 5 feet deep.

However, I always have ice picks and I don't go snow kiting alone. Anyone else considering snow kiting tomorrow?

I saw in the fishing report, in the Chi. Tribune that the ice is good on the chain of lakes.
I`m sure you will see signs of other activity, ice fishermen, and snowmobiling.
And like you said zerO, never go out on the ice without your ice picks.

I was considering it. Wind looks good but I am concerned about the ice. Hoping for more information before I make the drive.

I've also been looking at these two fields to try since this summer. Haven't been there since the recent snow, but my guess is that there's not enough snow at either so the lake would be better as long as the ice is solid:

1) This is pretty small, but close to home...it's mowed short this year: http://goo.gl/maps/4eKAG

2) This has quite a bit more space...it was planted in corn this year, but the ground has been tilled fairly smooth: http://goo.gl/maps/BUqgG

Both are forest preserve land and are otherwise unused. There wouldn't be any restrictions on kiting as far as I know.

Sure, everything was good last weekend, but then we had all that warm weather and rain during the week so, without more info, it's all questionable again.

I will be checking Grass lake tomorrow. Today I saw fishermen and snowmobile tracks on and around "chain o lakes" lakes. For sure I will have co2 pfd on me and ice picks if I decide to go out get on ice.

Grass lake ice is good - lots of snowmobiles and atvs out. Could use some more snow but still lots of fun today.

after a big snow and some 100 texts :D :D between 8 fellas we tracked it down and locked it in. 25 with gusts to 30 and snow squalls had me back on edge. everyone cut it loose and hung it out. killer rays and sunset topped off the sesh. love the snow spray from the big board pops and snaps.

Ice seems to be solid on Grass lake, there is open water under the bridge but this was always the case, there were five of us kiting today. Sunny, nice steady wind - not gusty, just wish there was more snow coverage... Yeah and too bad for 49ers.
