Strange that the wind showed SW....It was for sure South by the afternoon because I was heading at the jetty quite easily on my way in which means it was slightly on-shore.

I believe that the Waukegan meter is off +45 deg (approx), I started to observe this right after the meter has been fixed last year.

I have noticed multiple times that when the other meters in the area (i.e. Kenosha/Racine etc) were showing consistent directions Waukegan wasn't.

During the last summer I didn't ride in Waukegan at all but when finally got there this spring, after two sessions I had the confirmation of my thoughts.

A week ago I was riding on a straight onshore wind (ESE) when the meter was showing SE and yesterday afternoon between 3pm and 4pm we were riding a SSW but the meter was showing SW.

I'm sorry guys, but the SW winds at Waukegan this time of year can switch straight off shore in a heart beat. Over the years, i have seen this happen many of times. The water this time of the year is only 40 degrees, You guys would of been screwed if the winds shifted offshore. With water temps being so low, you should only go out if the wind is blowing side on.

some facts from yesterday

I did not know my 9.5 kahoona can take such gust. having smaller kite be much better but i not felt like pumping 3th kite.

Here is a bigger kicker. I did not realize I was riding on 12m til 2:00pm; not until a friend of mine pointed it out to me. It seemed to me that for the wind speed my 9 should behave a little differently (be more gentle), but then again, it was my first day this season;. I was pretty sure I took the 9m bag out of my car trunk. Both of my kites have the same colors and out of this excitement did not notice it. Lessons learned: 1) My 12m can take much stronger winds than I expected (with my 150lb weight, that's a big deal), 2) Pay attention not to the bag, but to the kite

I was pretty hot on my 16! I really didn't believe we would get more than 16 knots. The 12 worked much beter. That's the WARMEST I have ever felt in 40 degree water. I only quite kiting from sheer exhaustion.

The point about offshore winds and COLD water are well taken. You just have to dress properly and be mentally prepared ditch your kite and swim home for your life before things get out of hand.

That's what I was talking about. All the buoys and the Keegan meter all read SW/WSW all day beginning to think that maybe it is defective! Looked like a great day just wished that I read more than the Where to Ride and For Sale sections maybe I would have known about the get together BEFORE and not AFTER

We were all watching each other. Another impressive day of everyone helping each other out by grabbing boards, asking if the re-launch will work, etc. No one, that I saw, was left out alone for long. I think the water being so cold actually helped the South winds even more. A thermal effect was most likely happening sucking in the cold air to fill the rising hot land mass.
