brian,
walk me through what you are doing in the air to end up with a surface pass, 180?
I will throw a kiteboarding cliche at you and say commitment, any second guessing once the loop is initiated means no dice.
obviously one needs to be pretty lit up (preferably on a 10 or smaller) i am on a 9. The release from the water will determine if the pass will be made. When popping off the water i basically try to edge so hard my butt is on the water. When i pop with that much load against the kite I get slung at it. Initiate the rotation as soon as you feel the initial pull diminish.
It would be soooooooooooooooooooo much easier for me if i wasn't riding in such chop. My take off is limited by chop and my landings can certainly be foiled by chop. In the sequence that I ride away I actually land on the back side of a 3 foot piece of chop( that is the spray explosion) then plow through it. It would have been smoother and easier on the knees if I had gone two feet farther, or been riding somewhere where the water texture isn't psychotic.
good luck

jens. basically i ride a 7 or 9m lit up, riding powered, bring kite nearer to zenith, unhook, fishing pole, hold on. i usually swing out a bit so that let go with my front hand and land going straight down wind. from here it's really easy to do a backside surface pass by just bring the handle behind your back.
the problem i face is i think the same problem as my raley to blinds (i'm doing my loops to the left and techy stuff to the right so the pass we are discussing is the same thing). it's just a commitment factor of passing in the air under load and passing it fast enough so that you don't eat shit catching an edge on the way down.
and words to spur motivation greatly appreciated.

Brian,
Come down to Hatteras (OBX) with us this OCT (2nd and 3rd week) and Jens will get you dialed for sure. I'm making the final arrangements as we speak and hope to post more in the next few days. I know something else that will help, but can't post it on the forum. LOL.

where is BR ?
curious why you do loops on one side and techy to the other. I am regular foot on any board and basically useless going the other way. I would bet then that if your used to popping hard for unhooked trickes going one way you are not as strong with your edge and pop on the other foot and if you want to go pass the bar in the air after a loop you need that hardy pop and snap from the water.
I doubt that if I tried it switch i would not be able to come close. Still have to learn to do a rally switch.
