snowkiting on 1st fresh pow 12/05/2010

Me and 2 buddies went to the local park to learn/ride on fresh pow.
Turn out to be great day, at list for me even with this crappy wind, most of the day kite was falling down and you had to wait few sec to get going.however there were times where wind was just perfect for my kahoona 13.5 and riding was great.
New to the set up and technique made it very interesting day.

One wipe-out reminded me to were extra protection. it hurts when you being thrown over and land on your back. helmet did it job and camera survived, but i definitely felted the fall.

Sorry to interrupt guys, but safety first! Crashing with a kite on water is one thing but on land it can become a whole different story. Land conditions are usually more gusty than water conditions.

Its cool you are sailing and power kites etc.?? What is the etc? Sorry for asking so much just want to understand a little more that you did before.

What was covered during your kiteboard lesson. Have you ever stand on a snowboard / ski's?

Simply stated, I want to go kiteboarding.

Insofar as background, I'll offer say I have fair amount of (what I consider to be relevant) experience on everything but a kiteboard or snowboard. I get how kites work; I have & fly regularly a two-string Flexi Foil LEI & hand-built a 4-string Revolution. My lesson included trainer kite flying, body drags under trainer kite power, then, flight of the 'real' kite but we never made it to the board under kite power before running out of daylight. I now own a kite, 12m Cabrinha Omega HD which I purchased used from my (certified) instructor.

What do you recommend as an appropriate, safe next step?

well we all have to start in some point.
I would recommend for you to spend as much time as you can flying the kite- just the kite. it will come so natural , so when you fall you brain takes over control over kite before you know it.

Dutch has a point. land kiting is challenging- gust , hard landing etc.
But sure I don't mind helping so if you responsible and know ur limits we can hook up.

Thanks for your continued responses.

I agree getting quite familiar with the kite is a great thing to do. But how do you do that using a 12m kite w/o getting dragged across the landscape or lofted?

well it all about control and being safe.
i did go to the beach many times just to practice dragging myself on feet.
It a lot of fun especially with the smaller kite. you will learn the power of your kite. so when will get warm you will concentrate on water starts.
Now is the time to walk with your kite only using one hand.
Many thing you can do and they are fun.
pumping and connecting lines is FUN too.

With supervision by an experienced kiter on a light wind day with a small kite on a big field I don't see much of a problem. Usually you learn the sport much better on the snow than water. That's how my wife learned.

kytbord...do you snowboard already? if so..cool. if not...don't even try to put a kite up until you can ride at least comfortable on intermediate runs and able to edge well. then add a kite, but if you don't snowboard yet, it's a recipe for disaster.
