If you got some new digs, thinkin its gonna help your kiting step-up to the next level, blow out your used gear here and watch that grom shred harder than you on your old kite.

Everything is in the subject. If you have a board at a decent price (sub 350$) gimme a pm or send me an email.
Else have people found using a helmet useful. Just because of the board return when using a leech. I guess Lake Michigan isn't the most agitated water plane.

Lithium...
I have a couple LFT boards that would be perfect for you. They are 167cm but super wide and perform better than most 180-190cm boards. Short and plane up easily. Perfect for beginners and I still ride mine in light winds. They each have one ding in the rail, but it is minor and they have never been in the water. I'd sell one to you for $300. $0.50 of resin makes the board brand new.
