Kiting inside the piers at Waukegan.

Postby skysurfr » Tue Jun 18, 2013 11:49 pm

I launched inside the piers at Keegs today. I hadn't done that since our first year kiteboarding....a long time ago. It's an ok spot if you can hug the upwind pier giving yourself plenty of downwind room to mess up and recover.

The smooth water is ok for advanced kite boarders who know the risks and how to bail out in an instant. It gave me the hibee gibees and I went well upwind outside the piers to practice and play.

The area inside the piers not a safe riding spot for beginners. You can be launched and dragged onto the cement pier in an instant.

I know the flat water is nice, but it's not worthy the risk of a bad crash.

Just my 2 cents.

Isn't the water kinda nasty in there too? I remember seeing floaty junk there from lack of flow.

It's all yours Scott. When I arrived yesterday, I tried to do as the locals...and launch with them. Next time, I'm parking at the North end and launching there.

It was ok, to launch inside and then ride upwind to the outside, and be closer to your car.

The better option is to find a pier with a beach on the south side, to ride on North Winds. Kenosha? Racine?...if you want flat water and are a beginner.

Just review this video if you're wondering what could possibly go wrong in there.

Again, this is for our beginners, new riders who might look and see others riding in there and assume it's the best or safest place to ride.

yes waukeegan on a north is a huge misconception for the beginner folk EVEN if your on the main beach. The pier is one thing in itself but like my good friend Rodney, who many know from the day, he got separated in line with end of the pier and to which was fine until he drifted past the pier with just his board. At that point he was looking at a grueling swim as the beach pulls back to the sw, much different than where he launched. He was rescued by the last boat into the harbor just before night and cut back on kiting substantially after that traumatic scare. Remember to that the the rips on both sides of the pier at the halfway point out have serious rips. And then half way in can be a washing machine keep you in limbo on your progress to the rocks.

We need a pros and cons part to all the beaches in the where to ride section actually?

We need an edit to the entire website actually.

The pro's and con's is a great idea. Rider Level. Etc.

I second the PROS and CONS idea on the "where to ride" section, I think it would be a tremendous help for not only our beginners but riders of all levels that don't necessarily know the area.

I explained the CONS of Casino on Tuesday to three guys that hit the spot for the first time, they had kited before but not there.

One of them decided not to go out while the other two tried and after a little bit of struggling with their kites in the wind shade close to the Casino decided to call it for the day.

Nothing bad happened, they were thankful for the information but it doesn't always go that way.

I remember not a long ago an episode where a beginner was kiting between the piers in Waukegan on a north, IVO tried to explain to him the risks associated with that and recommended to head upwind keeping as much distance as possible from the pier. The guy didn't appreciate the advice and decided to stay, nothing bad happened but sometimes you ask yourself "why should I even try if I get this kind of feedback?".

Again, more info on our forum as well as more interaction with our newcomers/beginners will lead to safer kiters, let's share what we learned.

Beers for thoughts?

Cheers

Piero you are one of the most polite guy on the beach, you always take time to explain, point and help others,I salute to you buddy!

theUgly. As we were coming from last downwinder,I found kiter and his kite separated by concrete pier on the south wall.I got told "he lost wind and was fineeee".This is third same story in a month. The access to Waukegan will be lost, its not question if anymore, but when if riding, practising for beginners will be allowed in between jeties. That is advance spot as Mike already said.

Guys,I know it sucks, but start to be more pro active in this, get a buddy next to you and talk to new faces, before letting them hit the water.Be polite, nice to them and if they show you middle finger back than deflating kite is quite easy, isnt it?

btw, does anyone know what was the story from last week about kiter rescued by boat after he was Waukegone for hours?
