Looking forward to certifying many Chicago area kiters in the near future! Having an IKO card is essential if you would like to ride at Montrose Beach, the only kiting beach within Chicago, or Crandon Park, Miami. It is also needed to rent equipment almost anywhere in the world. In order to provide IKO certification cards, I would be happy to do skill assessments and check rides while I am in town!
My hope is to do the skill assessments next weekend on the 22nd or 23rd. At the moment, it looks like we'll have Southerly winds so Montrose will be offshore if that is the case. I am happy to organize a day wherever we have the most ideal conditions. More to be announced closer to the time when we have a better idea about the forecast. I will also be watching the forums and I am open to suggestions from all you wind experts out there please!

, 708-341-0003 - has been kind enough to volunteer his assistance for the day. If there are any others that could take some time to watch out for everyone it would be very much appreciated. It will be safer for all involved if we have a few experienced people out there on the lookout for trouble, good karma points too
Below are the skills that are needed to receive your IKO Level 3 Certification. Montrose Beach riding requires an IKO Level 3L or above.
□ Control the riding speed by edging
□ Consistent riding in both directions
□ Consistent riding in all directions including upwind
□ Ride amongst other riders and water users and respect right of way rules
□ Change of direction without stopping
□ Self- rescue and full pack-down in the water
□ Risk assessment and awareness of the riding area
□ Self launch
□ Make a toe side turn
□ Knows the theory and the safety rules for jumping.
□ Land a basic jump
This year the self rescue demonstration will be made to me on the beach. That way, I am able to better observe your technique and offer corrections if needed. Also, this will increase safety for riders, observers and the public. However, I still recommend getting in the water in nice easy conditions at least once a year to practice this technique. That way when you do need to rescue yourself, you will be more comfortable, confident and calm.
Skill assessments will cost $50 for any skill level. Please come to the assessments prepared for Level 3L minimum. If you feel as though you need further practice/instruction please do so before coming to the assessment. If you only need a little assistance, it will turn into a lesson and I will charge my normal hourly rate of $75 which will include the certification.

Please remember to always use a leash connected to a flag out line! The Cabrinha kites seem like you don't need a leash but you do need one. This is in case the chicken loop comes off resulting in a loose kite endangering others and yourself.
Please review and memorize Montrose guidelines:http://www.chicagokitesurfing.com/ridinglocations/rules/montrose.html
Thank you so much for your effort in complying to the rules. It is for the safety of yourself and the innocent people around you. Also, access to a city beach is precious and everyone must contribute to keeping it that way please. I don't think we'd have kiting at a city beach without the efforts of Skysurfer Mike and other dedicated folks. Also, Surfrider has been doing an amazing job contributing to keeping our beaches clean. I will be making donations to both the Montrose fund and Surfrider following the certification day.
