Where to kite in/around wisconsin

Postby rocktor » Mon Feb 10, 2014 11:45 pm

Hi, I am new to the forum. Thinking about moving to Minocqua, Wisconsin for a new job this summer, and wanted to scout if there are kite spots in/around the area (Currently live in Upstate, NY). Any info would be helpful to make my career decision.
Thanks,
PJ

I live in Madison(south central) wisconsin. In the interior of the state, people do ride the smaller, gusty, inland lakes that are plentiful. The lakes are surrounded by forests and cottages so access up there may be tricky but I am sure the locals have the spots scoped out. If you will have a car and time to travel, lake superior is just to your north and there is plenty of kiting up there (cold though, wet suit 95%of time).

There is a southern wisconsin forum that a couple of the guys from minoqua post on from time to time. You can check www.kiteridersllc.com and see if you can find any info there.

good luck

How often do you get to ride living in Madison? I am okay if I have kiting within 1-2 hours of driving distance (I'll drive more if I have to). Here in Upstate NY, we can ride from April/may/June at least 1-2 times a week and then September to November too. I checked out the website you recommended, there is some info but not much. I guess Chicago is 6 hrs and Lake Winnebogo is 3 hrs away. I could probably do weekends to those places but not sure if I could catch evening rides etc after work around where I live. And also how consistent is wind around that area? And Lake Superior seems to be great spot too. What months are people able to ride in Lake Superior?

Lake Superior is pretty epic, there are a couple riders in the tip of the keweenaw (Copper Harbor) and Houghton (some college kids). Otherwise check out Superior, WI http://superiorkitesurfing.com/ and if you want to head south myself and few others are in the Green Bay / Lake Winnebago area http://northsidekiters.com/ and http://www.wakkiteboarding.com/

I used to know of a few people trying to start kiting in the Wausau area, but never saw them much in the summer so I couldn't tell you what happened there.

As for places to ride, check out this map:
