Body of Missing Windsurfer Found

The 36-year-old woman missing in Kaneohe Bay since Saturday morning has been found dead.

Monica Weyant left the grounds of the Kokokahi Sailing Club alone on a windsurfer Saturday. For two days, police, firefighters, the Coast Guard, friends and family searched the bay hoping to find Weyant alive.

Shortly after sun-up Monday morning her body was found in the ocean across the bay near Lilipuna Street.

"We put a man up in the chopper and then they went along the coast line and sure enough in the area that we were going to check first, we happened to spot the body," said Honolulu Fire Captain Kenison Tejada.

Weyant led an active lifestyle. She spent a lot of time recreating in the water. Friends describe her as an accomplished windsurfer. She could also sail and used to paddle for the Waikiki Yacht Club crossing the treacherous Kaiwi Channel between Molokai and Oahu twice.

Friends said her comfort level in the ocean makes her death even more puzzling.

"She's really fit, rides a motorcycle, a real tough gal, so we can't understand why she'd get in trouble here in an hour or two on a windsurfer while we're in the bay. It's very surprising," said Chris Laletin, vice commodore of the Kokokahi Sailing Club.

Friends who spent the weekend hoping to find Weyant alive speculate she somehow hit her head, lost consciousness and drowned. But that's only speculation. The Honolulu medical examiner will perform an autopsy Tuesday to determine the cause of death.

Monica Weyant and husband Dan Weyant have been members of the Kokokahi Sailing Club for years.

Sources tell KGMB9 her father was flying to Hawaii Monday to help with the search. He presumably arrived to news that his daughter is dead.
