The split toe gives the boot rigidity. Not sure if you're jumping yet, but the booties I have without the split toe slide around quite a bit. You can even check my previous posts to verify. I feel like I'm riding on Jello. With these, they are more snug and rigid-feeling, but not constricting. I highly recommend the split toe for this reason. With their height, I plan to wear them over my suit so that waterspray goes up the leg and doesn't have a chance to fill my calf/ankle areas with any water. With the other booties or just riding barefoot with a wetsuit, the water shoots up the leg and makes its way under my ankle seal and eventually I get two blobs of water at the bottom of my legs.
