I know Miller is Awesome , and I'm talking about the Beach not the Beer , but with straight W wind isn't it little gusty ? Gary harbor is less than mile away .

Did you guys ever tried West Beach ( 2 miles east of Miller ) where W wind would be side shore and probably much cleaner ? Just an idea.

More like 1500ft , but it looks like you can drop off your stuff right on the beach by that building and than park.
Again it's just an idea , I've never been there.

true, that spot last weekend was good cause you know there's no shenanigans going on with your car.. I'll be back at the same spot we were last weekend, and if that place isn't open, I'll hit the spot on the right of the loop.. and if THAT's not open i'll park next to that (as ade calls it) parthenon building.. HILARIOUS!!

After a few lessons I can get up and ride, sorta stay upwind, but can't turn around consistently. Is Friday at Miller Beach seem like a good idea for a newbie? Water temps in the 30s with slight offshore wind. I have a 5mm wetsuit.

40s, not 30s anymore.

I'd say if you have boots, hood, and gloves- your will be allright for the conditions, but if the wind is offshore... idk.

you should be just fine it shouldn't be off shore at all.. also that's true about the temps the waters in mid to upper 40's now.. plus, as long as you're riding while there are others around that can kindof keep an eye on you, you won't have anything to worry about.. just introduce yourself and let someone know to kinda keep an eye out..

... by noon or so. If the wind is offshore though, I think I go further up, MC or SJ.
Iroben, don't worry about waves, I'm really just starting too, and I think this is less of a problem than all that crap you can get on Wolf, from high voltage power lines, to trees on that island, to semi-toxic water, to who knows what else.

I've never found myself alone at Wolf, but sounds like you are just starting out. Wolf is not for beginners at all. If you can't stay upwind on your first tack your tack back could land your kite in the trees.

It looks to be really West tomorrow at 18knots so I'll probably be at Miller where we met for the meet at the parking lot. Probably get there at 1 or 2

Rode wolf today for a little with artem...fun but underpowered


To be honest Wolf seems almost safer/easier to learn on than many inland lakes because it has a treeless launch unlike many lakes i've ridden also it is shallow unlike many other spots and yes it is gusty but find me an inland lake that isnt?

There is a cement wall but if you have you're lines connected right and you're safety set to flag the kite out and know how to use you're kites safety there should be no reason or excuse to ever get close to injuring you'reself or others and risking access.

Today was gusty but nothing about it felt unsafe unless you made it unsafe

I totally disagree. The launch on a South wind is EXTREMELY sketchy. I get my kite and GTF in the water. I do all my adjustments in the water. Too many times my kite just suddenly Hindenburged because of the wind shadow created by the island and then caught the wind again and I launch into the air/grass/1" water. Mike urban has broken his arm on that wall and he's a million times safer then me.

On a West wind you are directly facing that concrete wall, then a parking lot and 100ft later an open road. Again, all in 1" to 2" water when you first start.

I like Wolf and all, but there is no way I agree it's ok for a beginner. I've seen kites in trees and almost seen people really get hurt (including me). If you can ride upwind I think it's a good spot, but not someone just getting started.

Not trying to debate, we can talk in person about it, but I'd hope you agree it's WAY less then ideal for a beginner and on a West wind you should steer new guys to Miller/MC/ST Joe

Now im starting to remember when i sliced off my entire heal of my foot there a few years ago and litterally my whole board was just covered in blood i dont know how it didnt get infected. lol

Hi guys,
I'd like to join someone for a ride to Miller if possible (I'm willing to pinch in for gas if ness). I'm a noob too and still working on my water start. Last week, at the meeting, I didn't had much success, the waves just killed me and my hands felt like noddles at the end of the day .
If the weather allow it, I'll be happy to join someone (that way, I'll know I won't be alone there).
