Most likely rideable. I can't check right now, but all my experience says it's barely do-able. Please have your streamer and be VERY vigilant of the beach goers. I was stopped by the cops again yesterday and said kiting was not allowed. I had to pull out my phone to refer to the CPD site that says it is legal, otherwise I think they were gunning to either stop me or arrest me. Some cops are just dicks like that, so it's no joke....put that streamer on

Funny how the attitude has changed since the Olympic bid past. No so sports friendly anymore.

What is the deal with a "streamer"?

I am visiting the area soon with hopes of getting some kiting in. Will I need said streamer? And if so, what do I do with it?!

Thanks!

Got to Montrose around 630 after picking up the last streamer from Windward Boardshop and it was blowing 18-20 mph. Would have been fine on my 12M but couldn't go out due to the amount of people frolicking in the launch area and water. Watched the beach for about an hour and enjoyed a less than average snow-cone, every time a group of people would leave more would just fill in. Thought about pumping up my kite and claiming some space but being the only one out there I decided to play it safe and head home. I think if there was 3-4 kiters out there we would be able to claim a small part of the beach and keep the frolickers away... maybe next time.

You only need a streamer to ride at Montrose. There is information here:

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=10729

As for where to ride w/o a streamer you can check out the main site here:

There you have it a "dilema day" at Montrose. Thanks for posting your excellent decision making process. You followed the simple rule to keep it safe at Montrose....when in doubt...don't.

Were you next to the Dog fence? You may and I say..."may" have tried to enlist the help of the guards to clear the water directly in front of the launch. Since the swim area was open, Im guessing it wasn't really windy enough to go.

UNless you're an expert Montrose rider, the wind and water will fool you into thinking there's more out there. Plus there's some current from left to right as you face the water. The stronger the wind, the stronger the waves the stronger the current. It all takes away from the kites power. Most of the sand you see has been deposited by the current and the hook at Montrose.

My Montrose test....with the kite overhead, I walk very slowly towards the kite (downwind), and then pull in on the bar...if Im getting picked up on to my tip toes..or getting air...then there's enough. If Im sheeted in and not getting boosted, then there won't be enough on the water.

You made a great decision to wait for others, and then not go when you wern't 100% comfortable! Great job!

The last steamer? So what now, for those who went through the motion of getting certified for the purpose of riding Montrose?

The ball was dropped on getting more streamers. We'll be getting some very soon. If you need one contact me. I have some to borrow.

Just show up with your card in hand. If asked show your card.

You should expect to be asked by your fellow kiters.

We aren't operating in a Police state.

We are in the process of making more streamers. They will be done in a week or so.

There was an unexpected run on streamers. Our regular producer is a sailmaker and he's very busy in the summer. We are moving the production in-house. Adriend and I will be having a quilting bee and making more. The goal is to keep the costs LOW.
