I am listening to the police scanner right now... Officer on the way because someone is "para-sailing" in the bird sanctuary

i have heard negative comments (kayak chicago & life guards) regarding kiters near the bird area regardless if on the water or not. we should be careful or we will be without a city launch.

I'm heading out now for the after work crew. On a strong North you don't need to be in the bird area. Just stay way upwind if you are.

Parasailing in the bird sanctuary?

I was there at 11 30 with maybe one other kiter at that point. Nobody near the birds. Wasn't a kiter. A guy did snap a line and had to walk back from somewhere down that end. If thats what it was it was just time to recover gear.

What jerks if they called about us since we were always near the hook. Never saw any police.

Yep, I was the guy who was parasailing in the birds sanctuary.
A bridle line snapped, the front line went loose, and the kite got into a rather nasty spiral but I made it to the beach pretty quickly, and I don't think I spent more than 3 minutes there, just enough to wrap the lines, and walk back. No police, ever, and frankly, nobody around, I guess a bird watcher with good binoculars got pissed from some distance.
What a great day, by the way, the waves getting progressively bigger, and better organized (well, for Montrose), steady wind, warmer water than air, 10 kites in the air at times. Even Scottty betrayed MC, and showed up there!

I wish I could have skipped out and joined you guys, sounds like I missed a good session. On my way back to work from lunch I almost got ran over by a man sprinting down the street (in the loop) followed by 2 men chasing him yelling stop that guy. I turned the police internet radio on because I was curious of what happened.... turns out they caught the guy a few blocks later and it was a snatch and grab cell phone deal.

In the meantime I heard "Call Just in about someone para-sailing in the bird sanctuary at Montrose" I figured I would give you guys a heads up that someone is watching. On the reply the officer jokingly said "Maybe its just a really big bird, Ill check it out"

put that damn bird sanctuary up on the hill cuz thats where rare montrose waves exist on a rare montrose wind direction. birds or waves?

i glad u guys got some in M.
I was thinking about going there, but the wind look like is going to happen in Casino and the rain wont make there till much later.
Well we were right , rain never came, not till it got dark outside, but as soon as i hit 94 hwy it was pouring.
we started kiting at 12, it was on the light side12-15 kts and it started to build fast as fast as you can pump ur smaller kites. so we went from 14M to 12m to 10m to 7M in no time.
In peak time we had 5 kites but the beach was littered with kites, like a the sunny warm windy day in Kegan.
Big clean waves started to roll in with the glassy water in between. great day, one of the betters in C for sure.

Glad you boyz got it at Casino and Montrose.....ripped it up with Greg at MC on our way back from Point Betsie and Little Sable Point where it was "off da hook".....pulled into the parking lot at MC with the wind blowing thru the parking lot and the waves pumping....wind side-on and hammering, waves breaking off the lighthouse ....lit 9m on 20 m lines, kited until we just couldn't hit anymore lips or sky any more jumps....we must be gettin' old cause after 5 downwinders at the "POINTS" we just didn't have it in us to last thru sunset.....deflated the kites with the sand still blowing in the parking lot....that was a first for sure!!!!!!!!! More wheaties next time around, sure gotta love that MC MAGIC!!!!!

ndeed you can see how sensitive this place is. I get the feeling that sometimes people think Im being over cautious. I'm not paranoid, but that doesn't mean everyone isn't out to ban us at Montrose! :-P

Both the bird watchers and the kayak rental folks have it out for us. The bird people have videos of kiteboarders in the bird area. If and when push comes to shove they will be ready to make their case.

In this case, you did the right thing. You had a problem, self rescued, and left the bird area asap.

I would appreciate a note on here, a txt, or a call when this stuff happens. If I get a call from the city, I can be prepared with a response.
