New SUP Access.

Postby skysurfr » Sun Apr 21, 2013 9:10 am

I emailed the CPD a couple of weeks ago asking what was up with our request for new access for SUP's and Yak's on the Lakefront Trail. It seems they stopped working the issue in the fall and have promised action on the issue any year now. :-P

Hopefulyl we will have access at a handful of new spots very soon.

We requested Hollywood, Wilson, and 3 others heading southward....to include the new beach at 31st. It's been so long I'd have to go back and look at my folder.

I'm most excited about Hollywood and Wilson. When you launch from Montrose you'd be able to go somewhere, rather than in a giant circle.

Here is a list of the recently approved additions to the Lakefront Trail. SUP assess is now allowed at the following beaches:

Hollywood. Near the street access. Available streets (Ardmore and Thorndale)

Foster, to the North is OK. Just at the iron structure, there is a sand bar with an immediate drop off. Location is away from the main beach

North Avenue: West of the rental area, inside the hook, outside the pilings.

31st: Better on the south end of the beach/ north side of the pier. There is a cut out along the pier. During low water periods, "catching on the rocks may pose a problem. Use caution during low water periods. There is a rock wall under the water.

57th: The north side of the beach.

Your input is welcome and encouraged. We may need to shift launches as beach, water, and obstructions are considered. Please say hello to the guards. This will be a new experience for them as well. The more we work together the better the experience will be for everyone!

Thanks again to Ian at Chicago SUP, Jess at Windward Boardshop, Adrien star of Montrose, and Surfrider Chicago! Another great team effort has paid off!

Here's the old list, yet to be updated with the additional 5.

I don't think 39th is on there. I think I did a map as well... ?

These locations are
Leone Beach
, the Wilson Ave. ramp at Montrose Beach,
the south end of Montrose Beach,
Montrose Harbor,
Diversey Harbor north,
Diversey Harbor south,
12th Street Beach,
63rd
Street Beach,
Jackson Park Inner Harbor,
Rainbow Beach
and Calumet Beach.

These
locations are clearly marked with signs that say “Lake Michigan Water Trail Launch Site”.

Uhhhh...why didn't you collaborate with me on this...you know I can share my map to you or vice versa. Sorry I'm a tech geek and I hate it when shit is unnecessarily hard.

Sorry about that then. I wish I could have helped. I just want to take some weight off your shoulders. Either way, good work. Can't wait to paddle some with some kiters and not just my regular SUP group in the summer. :D

I'll post up if I'm ever going out for a trek

Thanks for the Good work! I'm a kiter and paddler and i'm bringing my gear to the City this summer. I'll have to meet up with some of the locals for a paddle once I'm relocated.

Hey Mike - it's Keith W. - your brother Mark's friend. I am moving back to Chicago and picking up a Naish 14' Glide (ast). Maybe I will see you guys out there!

I am going to try and demo it this weekend. Debated between the 12' 6" and 14' - decided what's another 1.5 feet. It has gotten great reviews - and it is supposedly more durable (and less $) than carbon. I am not racing or anything so it doesn't really matter to me. I'll let you know how it goes. I also have a ULI inflatable 14 foot tourer - it's a great board for a blow up.
