Montrose 6/13-Thursday N@30kts

Postby skysurfr » Wed Jun 12, 2013 3:32 pm

Looks like a good North tomorrow, 6/13.

Summer is in full swing. Ive had meetings with the guards, dog people, and our new neighbors at Chicago Surf. All are expecting us to live up to our agreement and the rules in place.
Chicago Surf will probably have some surfboards out in the waves.

Everyone's been pretty lax with the streamers the past two times I've been at the beach. Please fly your streamer, please have your card available if asked for it. No streamer, no card, NO KITE!

We have had a few warm days and people are thinking about the lake and being at the beach again. Crowds and people mean we stay farther out. Head for the rollers and have some fun!

If you're looking for near-shore breaking waves... Waukegan is up there and Casino is down there....

You shouldn't be riding inside the yellow can / bouy... Look for it you'll see it. Its off to the right as you face the water, just outside the swim zones.

Put on the streamer, head out to the rollers, and have some fun. It's not complex at all. Avoid the shoreline/lifeguards/people/piers/kayaks/surfers/dogs/birds... :-)

I am in... not sure what time though, looks to be stronger in the morning.

I'd rather do a downwinder ending in Keegs if anyone is interested let me know.

WHere would you start downwinder to keegs? Kenosha? I could be in, taking work off tomorrow. Looks like its gonna be better down on the south end though.

We did it from 17th st beach last year. It looks like its going to shift from NNW to NNE. So it would be probably for those of us that are taking a half day tomorrow.... any other takers?

I've got the day off tomorrow too. I'm game for a downwinder, Zion to Waukegan should work. If straight north will be a touch offshore coming in at Waukegan but should be great most of the stretch.

I think it's only blowing in the morning... of course during my only 3 hours of work.

From Our website:

To ride at Montrose Beach in the city you need to be certyified to an IKO level of K/L or PASA Level II.
The first topic in the Open / General Forum marked Montrose 2013 explains this in more detail. From our website and the CPD's website:

1. Only PASA Level II (or similar IKO) kitesurfers may ride Montrose Beach.

2. You must have a city-issued kite streamer attached to your kite.

3. Safety Equipment must be used including an attached Kite Safety Leash.

4. 100 foot minimum Safety Zone from kite. Remain clear of people, piers etc.
(This means that when your kite goes down, it should be 100 feet from the shore, piers, people, etc)

5. Kiteboarding allowed upwind the swimming area only.
(This means 200+ feet upwind of the swim areas. See #4. The Dogs are people too!)

6. Teaching is not allowed at any time.
(We have permission to do limited certification days at Montrose!)

Don't sweat it FD...Montrose may look great cause it's right here but it's anything but...lots of people, big chop from all directions (primary swell, secondary swell, bouncing off the revetment wall, bouncing off the Montrose hook). Then there is a big push of water from all those funky swells, one tack your moving with it (underpowered) the next tack your agin it (overpowered). Great spots within an hour that work much better. Not to poo poo Montrose but till you are really dialed in like Mike and Aid and the other legends at Montrose...it's not the place.

Just got back from Montrose. Great time out but it was pretty choppy hard to wrestle and started coming more on shore. Great fun for a early morning session. Excited to hear how the downwinder in Zion/Keegs went?!

Bryce took the wind with him.

The Fat Lady is down! Bens 17 isn't enough right now.

I had a great 10m session. Warm water too!

Mike ..... BBQ time!

Thanks to all the riders with Streamers today. When the CApt of the Guards walked through to check streamers, all 6 riders had one!

I've been told to expect more frequent streamer and CARD checks.

Anybody know what it costs to get "certified" here in Chicago?

I think Amanda charged me $35 for the IKO card last year but don't quote me on that. Its cheaper than one trip to Waukegan and back including parking.

When I got there the wind was starting to fade. Bob and I found ourselves constantly underpowered with progressively larger kites for a few hours.
