Ban the Plastic - Tue 6/18 10a

Bring your reusable bags when you grocery shop and show up Tue 6/18 to Chicago City Hall to show your support for banning free single use plastic bags. Surfrider is hoping for a strong showing of the local hard core surfers & watermen.

Noble effort yet I use these for garbage bags instead of buying them at the store. So I would be sad to see them go. Mine don't blow around because I am not a slob...and using them instead of Glad bags actually saves plastic in the landfill. I got rid of most of my plastic (tupperware, etc.) I use metal, paper and glass.

As for my garbage, my family of three uses two of these a week. Yep, only two a week. And my kid was in diapers for 3.5 years. That means I used re-useable diapers. I welcome anyone to try to beat that...

I would like to see them ban disposable diapers instead of grocery bags...My goodness THAT is a problem.

I forgot to post this up, but thanks Mike! We're trying to set the tone to change the world away from plastics (always good). We're not sure yet how it will be implemented, but lots of higher up including aldermen are on-board with us in the effort. We're trying not to use the word "ban" as it carries some negative connotation to it. Politics, I know, but it's true.

V: Why not use a paper bag to do the trash then? I'm heading the same route with reusable cloth diapers. I've heard pretty good things about them and I'm not a wuss about body fluids. Anyway...enough of that haha.

More beach cleanups on the way and proposed one at Casino!

adrian there are exercises you can do to help control your bladder....haha!

ok seriously, I think there are three issues today:

1) be cordial and speak out

Speak out, I will walk up and ask people very nicely to not throw their cigarette butt on the ground in the future. This is tough, most get angry, but who cares!?

2) try to be clean yourself, set an example

I walked into work today and saw two styrofoam cups on the ground. I picked them up and threw them in the trash.

3) don't be embarrased to spread the word

I told the whole training class of 9 people what I did.

Beach cleanups are great but what are you doing at home?

Ok, ok, I've got one!... I was sitting at a stoplight in my hood when the driver ahead of me decided to throw the takeout bag, napkins, cups, and all other fast food waste, from everybody in their car out the window. I cordially got out of my car, asked why they thought my neighborhood was their garbage can and when they shot me the derisive looks, picked it all up and shoved it back in the driver's window telling them to keep their garbage in their garbage can of a vehicle. Does that count?!! :D

HAHAHA, awesome. I did that too once on Lake Shore Drive. At the stop light saw some trash get thrown out. I walked up, tapped on the window, "I think you dropped something" and threw it HARD back in their car and walked back. Now, this isn't the way to go about it for the masses, but the masses also don't throw shit out the window. Good points V. Be the change you want to see in the world.
