It takes time...lots of time, in order to chase down the waves on the BIG LAKE.
It takes knowledge, lots of knowledge to know where to chase down waves on the BIG LAKE.
It takes karma, lots of karma to be in the right place at the right time on the BIG LAKE.
If you travel to other places in order to kite, then you realize rather quickly the depth of the "kiter camaraderie" on Lake Michigan...it is undeniable!! As for "localism" and "secret spots"....I say HOGWASH....if as a beginner kiter you feel as though you perceive this, then step back and re-evaluate after "learning the ropes".....some beginning kiters feel entitled to know everything about kiting LAKE MICHIGAN instantly, as if that is their right upon picking up the sport. The problem with that is that there are very limited times and places for these kiters to SAFELY kite the BIG LAKE....it takes time to develop the skills to kite many of our launches, this is especially true during the spring and fall, and the wave conditions here can be rather treacherous....
If it is someone's desire to not only kite LAKE MICHIGAN, but to avidly chase the waves on LAKE MICHIGAN...persistence is your key!!! There are no "secret spots" to those who dedicate themselves to finding them on the BIG LAKE; however, I must warn you that they are very elusive, and that is where the "rubber meets the road" ......most kiters DO NOT want to spend the time or take the chance to find the waves, they WANT the closest place for them to kite....and that is the reality of it. It is hard enough to find wind on the BIG LAKE, much harder to find waves to go with it; and most kiters cannot handle the idea of driving another hour or two, with the chance of being "skunked" trying to find the best wave conditions, when they could have just kited there regular spot and gone home!!
As for kiters worried about others not understanding "wave etiquette" on LAKE MICHIGAN.....these are very rare instances, because if the waves are substantial, then there are simply not many kiters riding them. If on the other hand you travel to a "wave destination", be prepared to experience true "localism" (Santa Cruz, Hatteras, Maui, PR). And to truly understand this Cory, you have to adapt a surfer's mentality of I, ME, MINE!! Not Eroc's joking about IT, but an actual possessive mentality that exists in a surfer's mind; and in these spots you "better" understand the RULES, or else!!!!!!!
SO if someone "really" wants to ride the waves on the BIG LAKE....dedicate yourself (put in the time, make the commitment), and the so called "secret spots" will not seem so secret any more!! Pier and Ivo are a testament to that fact....
Been missing riding the waves with you Cory, surfboard and all!!!!!!!!!
