Tuesday/Wednesday Winds

Postby kitekid21 » Sun Aug 11, 2013 3:01 am

Where's everyone heading? I'm thinking of Keegs, but we'll have to see based on the wind direction.... and if the forecast comes through. I may need to resort to a wind dance to win the favor of the wind gods.

Any reason we shouldn't go to Michigan City? With wind headed south, that seems like the safest bet, and the forecast looks more windy down there. I'm a noob, so feel free to educate me if I'm dead wrong.

There's tons of space at Waukegan, which I prefer if I'm working on throwing down some tricks. I also prefer that the wind be side instead of almost directly onshore, because the chop at MC is intense (That I've encountered). I mean, we'll see for sure tomorrow morning, but for now, I'm leaning towards da keegs.

Tomorrow is looking to be my first time to kite here in the area- I'm an intermediate/advanced kiter and wondering where to go. Would love to meet some of the fellow kiters in the area. I've been trying to scope out some of the smaller lakes in the area, but 'The Windy City' seems to have more bodies of water, than kitable wind speeds so far...

It's the "windy city" not due to wind, but due to the windy politicians aka: liars. It's almost exactly an average city for wind. Try Zion tomorrow, but someone might want to post up. I'll be at Montrose, but you will need a streamer (check main website) for that regulated beach.

Kitekid, you convinced me. I guess the questions now is which is better, Waukegan or Zion?

Ms-bek, this will be my first time kitesurfing in the area too. Just learned in Cabarete. Kite boarded a couple times in Madison before that. First time on this equipment. But I did watch a million youtube videos so I should be a freestyle expert by now. Ha Ha. Why isn't anyone laughing?

Heading to either Waukegan or Zion depending on feedback. Wind looks best from 3am to noon. http://www.sailflow.com/spot/1825#forecast
So I'm hoping to get there around 9:30

I live right near Union Station. Might be nice to carpool to these destinations if anyone lives close.

Can't friggin wait!

If you show me that IKO card I can give you a permanent streamer. Give me a call/text and we can meetup tomorrow. No issues with coming early or staying late at the beach....they will just have you put your kite down if you don't have your streamer.

Unless it goes NE, then the wind is always better up at Zion on a North when compared to Waukegan...if Waukegan is good, Zion will be better, that much is certain....looks to be an early one there..

As for MC, a NNW is onshore, making it very challenging to get out and very difficult if you are not familiar with onshore winds....some like onshore winds, especially at the bottom of the lake, cause of the size of the waves. However for beginners and for those honing their skills, skimming the shoreline can be quite dangerous to yourself and to those on the beach, and getting over the breaking waves to make it to the outside is very tough...basically, kiting onshore winds that are 20 and above is for experienced kiters.

The forcast may change but it appears as though this N will be slightly side-on, on both the Michigan and Illinois shorelines and onshore at the bottom of the lake, which is quite typical this time of year on a North push....

Have fun wherever you go, and like always kite safely and respect others and the Big Lake..... :) .....keep on dancin' buddy, and I will keep shakin' the rocks.....shake, rattle, and rollllllllllll, time for some shoreline skipppppppin'

All right, Zion as early as I can get there. Hope to meet some new faces. Thanks for the advice!

GO EASTTTT Sailors! Mc can pull the North winds very side on out of the NE (great cross shore) as later in the system and always ends up that way as it leaves the area. Many times its NNW in JOe and then NE down here later in the day. Depends on just how strong and how long it sticks around! NE is very nice though with pretty big sets and a great angle that comes across 3 sandbars making it a lot like the ocean if happens. JOe on the other hand can be very clean, but fickle in that a NNW that heads N can leave the inside very gusty hence the great waves. spot check or get a bro call is the only way and do heed caution to the conditions if big (rips and pummling waves abound)!

Keegs it is for me. Should be good from noon onward. Lots of beach, hopefully just a little chop, plenty of parking, hopefully no beachgoers, and maybe even setup a downwinder from Zion to Keegs. We'll see about that downwinder though.
