In the event that I don't have enough information to fill in all the bubbles (I'll exclude parking in this because rates change so often), I'd rather not put it into the map. That's why I don't like prospective spots; All we need is to have me guessing that a spot is good based solely on google maps, and then someone getting hurt because I didn't tell them about boulders in the water... or something along those lines. I mean, crazy stuff can happen, but if I can, I like to be able to include things like wind shadows and rocks and trees.

Unfortunately, tacos have little to do with kiting. I've put in two breweries on the Great Lakes Map, and I can include more with the different little icons (which is super nice btw), but including that info with the kite spots isn't necessary to the kiting. It's nice, but in my opinion detracts from the utility of the kite spot map. Having it separate allows a kiter to plan for it if they're looking for a drink... but doesn't make it integral to the spot.

Simple, concise, pleasant to view, and organized is what I'm going for. Again, there are some spots that have more information than others and details about e.g. swells and debris... and in an orderly fashion, but I only have that information if someone sent it to me.

I realize that many Chicagoland kiters don't have tremendous interest in Lake Erie kiting spots, but the point is to be a resource for kiters in the entire area and my personal goal is to encourage forum discussion about spots in the entire area as well.

PS. I don't know if that was your intent or not but software and IP licenses were invented for a reason...

Feel free to PM me more spots if you have any. If there is any information that you would like to add, I'm happy to discuss it.

Hi, I just moved to Chicago from MN. We moved to the Wheeling area. I am looking to do some kiteboarding. For the past few weekends it seems like the max wind has been about 14 kts. I just got back from vacation in Puerto Rico where we went in much stronger wind. (it was absolutely incredible)

I have not seen anyone out at the beach in Waukegun or any other beaches the few times I have looked.

Are there people that make it out consistently in these low winds?

Do I just need different gear? I am 180 lbs and have a 11 meter kite and a 160 cm board. Maybe I need to get a surfboard.

Is my forecast not very accurate? I have been checking windfinder. It seems like the wind rips from west to east across the city then stops as it hits the lake.

Please let me know of any pointers.

Summers are big kite riding on Lake Michigan. Fall season is good for the 10-12m.

...and yea, PR rocks. I go pretty much every year.

Hey Keith

Your best bet for the lighter winds is a bigger kite. Also, that huge board you have is not a great match for an 11M kite as with winds appropriate for that size kite and a twintip will typically bring waves and choppy conditions on our big lake. For your weight and with that 160, in winds a bit less than 14 kts, you would do much better on something like a 17M. Now for that 11M, I would highly recommend a smaller, more maneuverable board. It will be much more fun and easier to navigate the water conditions during 11M winds. You could even have a great time on that smaller board with a bigger kite... wind dependent. Save that 160 as a session saver for when the wind drops too much for a smaller board when the wind drops or to get warmed up when you're waiting for the wind to come up.

If interested, I have some good deals on slightly used, but in excellent condition, larger kites and can even get you on to a great bang for the buck board. Contact me direct if interested.

As far as when & where to ride, check the where to ride section here or, join this Facebook page for another great resource. We're out all the time in winds 11-12 kts & up!!; https://www.facebook.com/groups/KiteboardChicago
