Fall is Upon us....

Post by West » Wed Sep 07, 2016 9:46 am

The days of summer are gradually getting shorter, the fall equinox is nearing. The first yellow and orange leaves are showing their colors while their green cover is diminishing...

The seasons are in limbo; we're in the annual September doldrums, which while lingering long, will give way to the hammering westerlies and the gale force SW winds that whip the Big Lake into a frenzy, before giving way to the mammoth North winds that lay claim to their domain....

Fall is the season we train for, yearn for, and dream about the entire year. It is the season that brings on the cooling temperatures, deserted beaches, the heavy winds, big waves, the long downwinders! It is the season that turns your kiting buddies into family members and cements those relationships!!

Kiters get ready; tune your gear, hone your skills, strengthen your body, calm your mind: it ain't Disneyland out there!!! Eye of the Tiger....

Rolled on up the Big Lake Sunday after sup'n w Da Trooper on his birthday at casino!! Happy 36 for Ivo!!!! Wind was crankin as the harvest moon was rising, and it picked up even more on Monday. We hit a few downwinders around Pt BETSIE in sunny warm water conditions, absolutely gorgeous!!

Wind backed on Tues and we did some sup'n around LSP, and enjoyed the crystal clear water while swimming at the base of the lighthouse!! Another big sigh as Fall gets ready to wrestle the reins from Summer....

Glad it was great in MC yesterday. It looked awesome. Wish I could have joined, but couldn't leave my dog alone that long. WINDY in Madison, but gusty. Great to see you also in Sheboygan for the epic kite working downwinder. My shoulders are still burning from working the kite so much. Keep an eye on Thursday.

Rollin, rollin, rollin!! Leaves have begun to turn and some to fall, frosts have hit here and there, gloves have made it back into the wetsuit line-up....hammering N have begun to hold the lake for a day or two, SSW gales are showing their might; its ALLRIGHT on the big lake.

Been kiting from Sheboygan to Pt Betsie the last few weeks, in a myriad of conditions, tagging downwinders most every session. There have been several memorable highlights.....
--in hilarious fashion, I managed to put my 7m 60 ft up into the top of a tree at Zion, had to return the next day and hire a tree "climber" to remove, just a 4" tear!
--welcoming back Trooper with a short dwndr from Marquette to Portage, always great to get your kiting buddy back from an injury; wind was low, but our spirits HIGH as we moseyed our way down the coast....later to be "tossed out" of Marquette by Gary's finest, in the name of safety!
--a big beat down in the shore break at Zion North; had to attempt 5 times to get out in 6 ft relentless shore pound, releasing kite twice, which luckily landed unscathed on beach, as I got pummeled back to shore, quite humbled but still determined to get out!
--full moon camping at Holland State Park with the trees creaking and swaying while the leaves rustled and busted loose in 30 knots ALL night long; rigged in the dawn colors and setting moon and greeted sunrise from the water in pumping waves and wind!
--running a dwndr with the bros from Frankfort to BETSIE with an approaching storm bearing down on us; "running the gauntlet" in a somewhat haphazard manner I must admit, tho the storm veered North and left us with sunlight patches, smooth winds, incredible waves and a receptive lighthouse!
--tag teaming the best conditions I've seen below Winthrop Harbor with the Madtown madman; peeling head+ on a remote, deserted beach, riding em all the way to the sand!
--pleasure cruisin "solo" from Muskegon to the Honey Hole after the wind began to back off; looping the kite, milking waves and limping on down the shoreline while checking out the gorgeous shoreline with the yellowing trees dotting the dunes and pondering the long walk out...luckily the wind held and increased as I made it down to Montague to Blueberry Bob "dicing it up" all by himself!
--sittin in my truck and waitin out the rain at sunrise at the casino, shakin' the wind rocks, hopin for the wind to return as the storms passed, taking a brief nap, and waking to the sight of spray being blown off the tops of the wave remnants left from the nights' thrashing! Can you say 9m soul sesh?
--doin early morning recon with Blaze and Shocktop to run a dwndr: checking several locations along the route with increasing wind and waves, picking the launch according to our "wind window", rigging 9s and departing in sun-splashed waters; having the conditions change numerous times amidst the intermittent hooting and hollering that always seems to accompany our journeys...making a mad dash for the finish line as the rain pelts us and begins to come in sheets; the subsequent refreshing, quiet walk the final mile or so along the michigan shoreline joining your buddies, laughing and smiling!
.......just a few of the snippets from the last several weeks of kiting on 'Ol Mother Michigan as Fall is in full force; be safe, get out, and make some memories, they're priceless!!! Peace

Damn West, you sure know how to extract the most from your lake.

We were out in Cape Hatteras for part of that, but sadly missed Hurricane Matthew. I believe the gang from Chicagoland and the cheeseheads caught it good, but have heard only minor reports (from Grigory Burov, who kites with us on Clinton Lake, and said he had a gusty 5.5m session on the sound). Ken Moyer and I went out early to catch two days of NEaster (Friday/Saturday) with nice big swell from Hurricane Nicole, doing oceanside downwinders from Salvo to Avon, then a whole week of little wind (okay for me as I can work on the road, but a bummer for most of the 30+ kiters and windsurfers in our group). Then finished up with a strong NWester on the Saturday when most people leave, giving plenty of jumping on the sound, and home on Sunday.

Just one day here since then this past Saturday with a nice warm SWester, which is perfect for Clinton Lake, and winds into the mid-20s. We had 8 kiters at the marina riding from 10AM to 3PM.

I'm hoping to get up north for one more session this Fall before it gets too cold for me (can't stand booties, hoodies, or gloves), but am headed for Cape Town for six weeks of our winter, so might just wait for that.

Right on Hugh, keep on it buddy!!

Here comes the strong SW winds that strongly designate that fall is in full swing, and trying desparately to hold off Old Man Winter!! We all know who wins that battle....

Looking like the classic 4 day blow thurs-sun. Catching up w the bros for breakfast in da mañana and scouting out the days' dwndr tween st jo and holland. Gonna roll the mich shoreline till the wind backs off. Get some of this sunny windy Shiz if u get a chance... Peace out

Hi All, I'm new to the Lake Michigan scene and went out to see wazzup at Waukegan today. Wind was pumping WSW but not a soul in sight. Is it the wind direction, weekday or something else that kept people off the water today? I live in Deerfield, IL and am looking for the closet place to kite. Is it Waukegan? Also, I would prefer to go with others around for the first time. When are there likely to be some travellers on the water at Waukegan?
