Lake Michigan sickeness

Post by jkjaeschke » Thu Jul 24, 2014 7:00 am

Had a great session at Montrose yesterday and am now feeling the effects of the lake(runny nose, sinsus pressure, no sleep). This is now happening more than 50 percent of the days I go out. Has anyone noticed this getting worse and have any cures tips? I've tried the neti pot and all sorts of allergy medicine to no avail.

Does anyone have a solution that works for them?

If I start to feel that neti pot usually does the trick to wipe the allergens out of the sinus system. You could be allergic to something in there. Do you notice it during certain seasons? It's not the cleanliness of the water because you either are fine or you'll be so sick you want to die. That's e-coli and I've had it twice from Waukegan and once from North ave beach. It's terrible.

If you get it again take a strong anti-histamine to block it and if that works you at least know it's an allergy. As far as what to do after that, sorry man, I got nothing. Plenty of Dr. on here so maybe they can chime in.

Many blame zebra mussels (you can Google it) for the lake allergies, I get the same reaction, mostly cannon-force sneezing, and congested sinuses. Claritin or generics, plus a nasal spray do the trick for me, for bad cases, you can get a prescription spray from a doctor.

U just Gota be in the water more often. U will
Become immune. The air is worse than the water.
No zebra mussels etc.....If you don't like the lake
It won't like you!!!

Wow, I envy your optimism.
I hope you'll never develop one of these nasty allergies that, unfortunately, have nothing to do with whether you like something or not.

It started for me years ago, certain inland lakes I can not even go in with out getting a sinus infection. I can surf any where in the ocean & never have trouble with the sinuses. I make sure after any Lake Session I Nasal Spray in the am & right after. But I also get shots every week & take a allergy pill every day. Just need to move back home to CA & be done with it......

I've had lake head for years.
I believe it's mostly due to the run off, waterfowl, sediment etc.
I've observed that when I ride near a pier with brown water emptying into the lake is when I get the worst symptoms.
After a rainfall as well.
I have also noticed less or no symptoms when I ride where there is no pier....for example LSP.
no problem.

Yesterday, I went to Urgent Care because I finally started coughing up blood.

Bacteria infection after 4 big kite days in a little over a week.

Fever, stiff neck, chills, sore throat, diarrhea - all came and went. However, the sniffle and hacking cough hadn't let up for 2 weeks.

At Urgent Care, I sucked on this tube of vapor for a few minutes. Then I got an antibiotic.

I am dumb for waiting so long. Should've knocked it out right away.

Yea the lake has seemed to get worse. A good thing to try before stuffing chemicals in your nose (prescription nasal spray) is to just rinse with sea-salt saline solution.

He-heating the old debate: am I the only one who got sick after riding MC yesterday? Classic allergy symptoms: cannonball sneezing, totally congested sinuses, slight fever, pretty much sleepless night...
I think the water from the channel got pushed toward us there no no big surprise - but it was pretty rough

Looking forward to watching the footage!

sooo
i been sick after many sessions, but in last few times i cant breath for 2-3 days, been reading a lot about allergies and lake Michigan, people have this problem all over great lakes, it is something about some algae, i been talking to Great Lake Environmental Research Laboratory GLERL to find out if they have any data, keep you post it.
I tried anything i could
Polish Vodka- make you feel better when you sick
Neti pot or spray- help but still you gonna get sick
nasal spray - not much help

so it got to the point that you have to pick the good days on lake Michigan and than suffer the consequences
or
use one of these
Sinus Saver Water Sports Nose Plugs
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss? ... se%20Plugs

i end up getting one, so i let you know soon if this works for me

Now, Ben, that looks like a beak! I would love to meet some bird enthusiasts at Montrose while wearing one of these, maybe they'd be friendlier.
Please post whether it works or not, may be well worth it, a shot of water up you nose in the break is the worst thing, that's for sure.

dont they look cool! 8)
they are made by the surfer who know about water flushing up your nose, i read some reviews on amazon most people like them -if they fit right-
many say it will take getting use to, like not blowing out so hard trough you nose.
will see i guess

update,
So Monday i end up in MC ready kite and deal with allergies later, however, this time i had secret weapon-my new nose plugs.
After afternoon riding and few good wipe-outs i never got any water in my nose
got home ready to battle 2-3 days of stuff nose but to my joy i was OK
next day same thing, i was just fine.
i will test them again, however, so far nose plugs worked great. breathing is OK, you don't really know you have it in your nose
i would recommend it to anyone who have the same problem

here comes my great picture :)

1. Wash your dirty self asap. I found that washing yourself well, including rinsing out your nose/sinus out, really helped lessen the symptoms. I had a Lifetime Fitness Membership and would stop on the way home and would shower, steam, swim in the pool...lather rinse repeat... and then have no "lake effect".

2. Rubbing my eyes made the symptoms much worse. If I rubbed my eyes, my sinuses would immediately start clogging, my eyes would itch worse, and I'd be miserable for a day or two. Wearing those stylish safety glasses helped as well.

I conquered the dreaded "lake-head" with 1.) hot water 2.) sea salt 3.) 60 cc syringe......u get the picture, Nasal Enema!!! Not fun but highly effective.....think of it like a neti pot on TURBO...

I went from having the aforementioned symptoms and several nasal infections a year to NADA....the key is ASAP when finished kiting.....it'll wake u up that's for sure!!
